drink more water
use conditioner every time you wash your hair
try washing your hair less, unless you have oily hair
eat healthy foods (since we are healthy from the inside-out)
wear a hat in the summer if you don' want your hair to get lighter
use a leave-in conditioner if you are in chlorine pretty often
blow dry and straighten sparingly
brush gently
rinse with cool water at the end of your shower to close off the hair cuticles and prevent fly-aways.
And finally, get a hair cut that works with what your hair already does. Don't force it to do something it's just not naturally meant to do. (Like don't straighten if your hair is naturally curly, etc...)

i know how! shampoo your hair every other day but condition it always. Shampooing everyday will take the natural oil on your scalp, thus making it look dull and unhealthy... less budget for shampoo and no need to hot oil.
