DYEING DARK BROWN HAIR LiGHTER??

Hey ive got dark brown hair and my desired shade would be a dark blonde but i know that would cause loadsa damage so im thinking of dyeing it light brown.

In the past ive dyed my hair sooo many times and didnt get the shade i wanted i just got red/orange tones because in the hairdressers i said do it 'natural' and 'warm tones' so now im going to look for 'cool' tones and colours so its just one colour

Now my hair is healthy and back to its natural colour so i want it light brown with little damage as poss. remember i want 'cool' or ash colours so theres no reddish hightlights.

Can i do this at home?

any products you can find on the web i can have a look at please?? or your own exp??

thanks 10 POINTS TO BEST ANSWER!!

There is no healthy way to make your hair lighter then you natural shade. You will always be picking up the red/orange undertones because that is the underlying color in all brunettes. You can use an ash, because that is a green tone, which removes unwanted orange tones, but too much ash isn't a good thing either. You cannot lift somebody's hair without causing damage. If you want to damage to be minimal, I would suggest getting highlights because then not every strand of your hair is damaged.

ok, for one i would most def. go to the salon!! my mom let her sister convince her into to dying her hair from dark brown to a dark blonde and my moms hair turned out a reddish orange color. so i would just go to the salon they get paid to do there job and do it right, and if they dont then most likely you wont have to pay if they mess it to bad. good luck

I am a licensed cosmetologist. I would not do this at home! Unless you have a friend that has a license. Everyones hair is different.Yor base color determines the final color your hair comes out. You say you have been in the past getting red %26amp; gold tones. You need to use a green base to counter act the red/gold tones.Green base will cut that red.Have you thought abous streaking it? Anytime you use a chemical on your hair it will cause some damage. you need to use a professional shampoo on your hair always. I recommend Biolage shampoo %26amp; conditioner. A little bit goes a long ways. You can tell the first time you use it ,it works! Good luck %26amp; let me know.

I would also say go to a salon. I have dark brown hair and wanted it to go light brown or a dirty blond and I went to the hair salon they have in Wal-Mart and they fried my hair. She died it once turned Orange! Twice-Oranger! And she did it the 3rd time same session and it burned my scalp. So I would say it is worth the money to get someone your trust to do your hair the right way the first time. I paid 40.00 to get my hair orange and there was nothing I could have done about it. So good luck, the lady told me my hair was so dark it would not turn. But I know thats not true.

I agree with toxic, please go to a salon and have it professionally done. I have the same hair dilemma as you do. I had 2 toned my hair which was a bad mistake on my part.

It was dark brown on the bottom and yellowish gold on top because she colored on top of color, did not like the results so then I went to another hair dresser 3 weeks later explaining to her what I wanted done. My natural hair color is dark blonde, fair skin, blue eyes and pink undertones, she put foils of bleach in between the dark brown and then applied dark blonde all over my hair and my results were a dark blonde with gold/ red tones.

I told her I wanted a cool shade to match my skin tone and she did just the opposite, so in order for me to achieve the desired color I want, I have to strip my hair of all color and re- dye it again. The only advise I could give you is have it done in a salon, trust me you will be glad you did. Hope everything turns out ok.
